San Lorenzo Charterhouse

The Certosa di San Lorenzo, also known as the Certosa di Padula, is the largest charterhouse in Italy, located in the Vallo di Diano in the province of Salerno. It was founded in 1306 and is one of the most sumptuous monumental Baroque complexes in all of southern Italy, as well as the largest charterhouse at national level among the largest in Europe. In 1998 it was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco and currently the Charterhouse hosts the Provincial Archaeological Museum of Western Lucania, which collects finds from the excavations of the necropolis of Sala Consilina and Padula.

During the guided tour, you will discover the different areas that make up the complex, which extends over a vast area divided into three cloisters, a garden, a courtyard, a kitchen and a church. The largest of the monastery's three cloisters is the largest in the world and is surrounded by 84 columns.

From the large cloister, crossing a corridor and a door, through a small spiral staircase, in white marble, making about one and a half turns, you reach the library which has the floor covered with Vietri sul Mare ceramic tiles. In the great kitchen, legend has it that an omelette of a thousand eggs was prepared for Charles V.
